Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has shot down claims that he’s building another ‘bloated’ squad full of young players ahead of tonight’s clash against Luton Town.
Over the past two seasons, both supporters and the media have highlighted a key area of weakness for Chelsea has been the sheer amount of players in the first team squad.
That’s been corrected over the summer transfer window though, with almost 20 players leaving in one way or another in a mass clear-out ahead of Pochettino’s arrival
But over the summer, the spending spree the club has gone on has led to them signing potentially up to 16 players – many of them under the age of 23.
Bringing in the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Andrey Santos, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu have meant that while there’s a lot of potential for the future, there might be too many stars to hand regular minutes to.
Asked by Gary Neville before the Luton game if he was worried about the size of his squad amid all in the new arrivals, Pochettino dismissed the concern.

“I think we have plenty of young players also that are involved in the squad, that is why it looks like a bigger squad,” the Blues boss claimed on Sky Sports.
“The reality it is it not a bigger squad. It is an exciting moment, of course after two games that we did not get a victory in, it is a little bit disappointing.
“But it is only a matter of time and, for sure, this team has the quality and capacity to win games, it is only a matter of time.”
