Report: Spurs are experiencing ‘tense situation’ with Eric Dier’s future at the club

The Athletic report that Tottenham are experiencing a ‘tense situation’ regarding Eric Dier’s future in North London, which remains in the balance this summer.

Dier’s contract only lasts another 12 months in N17 and Spurs are now said to be keen to sell the central defender this month in order to recoup some sort of fee.

However, Dier himself would rather wait until next summer when he can leave on a free transfer.

The England international has not featured in either matchday squad so far this season under Ange Postecoglou, let alone got a minute of action on the pitch.

As such, The Athletic claim Dier has three options available to him. He can wait and leave on a free next summer/leave on loan this summer, find a permanent exit in the next couple of weeks, or stay at Tottenham and try to work his way back into the team.

Dier is reportedly open to a loan move if the right club comes along, but this would involve Spurs accepting they will lose the defender on a free next year.

Fulham have shown interest in a permanent move this summer but Dier is not likely to agree to a transfer, and a free move abroad is seen as the most likely outcome.

It’s a shame because selling Eric Dier and bringing in a younger, faster centre-back would be the ideal option. However, one can understand why he wants to control the next step in his career, and he has always been the model professional so I’m sure he would remain a valued voice in the squad if he stays.
