Regarding Justin Fields, a former Chicago Bears coach had nothing but negative things to say. About Fields’ performance in the league, a different former coach of his offered some harsh remarks.
This offseason, the Chicago Bears had to switch quarterbacks.
Fields was sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick, allowing the Bears to move on from him. Caleb Williams was selected by the Bears with the first overall pick.
Bears supporters should be happy that they now have Williams to root for, but many in Chicago were disappointed that general manager Ryan Poles ended the Fields experiment. A less positive picture than the one his teammates and coaches painted for the media last season has emerged regarding Fields’ time in Chicago.
Issues with Justin Fields in the locker room
Early in his playing career, Fields experienced conflicts with teammates. Go Long and Tyler Dunne are claiming that Fields’ relationships in the locker room were “surface level,” despite the fact that players defended him in front of the cameras. In other words, players wanted to perform professionally, which is why they were willing to speak well of Fields in public.
Fields’ previous coaches are unhappy with H1M
Fields also caused problems for the coaches. Fields blamed “coaching” at the start of the previous season for his robotic play. A former Bears coach told Dunne that Fields’ play couldn’t last.
Fields’ first season was marred by injuries, and some pundits attribute this to former Bears head coach Matt Nagy starting Fields too early in the league. Former Fields coaches believe it wouldn’t have mattered because of the cerebral component of Fields’ game, according to Dunne.
Those are harsh remarks made by former coaches that should not be on a CV. In the NFL, though, opponents are aware of his issues and intentionally use zone defense against him to stifle any passing attack.
Fields’ recovery will now fall to the Steelers. In an effort to revive his NFL career, Fields will start the season sitting behind seasoned player Russell Wilson.
Fields does have one opportunity to display his decapitated-fowl powers, if the Steelers choose to ask him to return kicks in Pittsburgh.
