Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou faces quite the team selection dilemma with his squad ravaged by injuries ahead of a Premier League clash against Wolves. During a brutal ten-minute spell in the London derby defeat to Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, both James Maddison and Micky van de Ven were withdrawn due to an injury.
“Madders, a lot worse than we thought. He came off with the ankle injury, but the next day wasn’t great so we sent him off for a scan. So again not great for him and probably into the new year for him.” Richy had the operation, which we’d kind of scheduled anyway because Richy has been battling with it from day one and we thought with the international break coming up we thought it would be a good time to get it done. He should only be a month if everything goes well so not too long after the international break.”
Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are also suspended which leaves Postecoglou with the task of making at least three changes to his starting defence. While Spurs hung in against Chelsea with a makeshift back four of Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Emerson Royal and Pedro Porro, replacing Maddison will be a challenging task. Giovani Lo Celso is perhaps the most natural successor, however using Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma as the two advanced 8’s is perhaps more of a possibility.
Dejan Kulusevski is also an option and deploying him centrally would likely mean Bryan Gil gets his first start of the season. While the core of the team is set to be heavily affected, it could have still become more of an issue as Porro emerged as a doubt in the wake of the Chelsea clash after not being seen in training. Thankfully, Postecoglou confirmed he was present at Hotspur Way in the recent days while also admitting Ben Davies was back available.
To keep some normality, Porro will be desperately needed for Tottenham this afternoon and it certainly looks as though that will be the case. Ahead of the game, the Spain international posted a pre-match graphic on Instagram promoting the fixture at Molineux, an action usually done by a player set to be involved in the matchday squad, seemingly dispelling any final concerns that he is not at 100 percent.
