Real Recognize Real report (2/7) – Major turn in Michigan’s defensive coordinator search!

A major development this afternoon has turned the tide in Michigan’s search for it’s next defensive coordinator

Welcome to the Real Recognize Real Report. That title isn’t grammatically correct, but it’s not supposed to be. It’s a colloquialism that is commonly used within my family and friend circle, highlighting how a person possessing a particular trait can readily identify others possessing that same trait.

A person who is genuine and authentic can recognize other people that are genuine and authentic. The “3R Report” will follow that theme – it’ll always include intel from real, genuine sources whose credibility has been verified. Installments will drop regularly. They won’t always be long, and they won’t always include huge news, but they’ll always be real.

Today’s entry focuses on a breaking news development in Sherrone Moore’s search for Michigan’s next defensive coordinator.

Sources have informed the Michigan Insider that Kansas City Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen has sent word of his decision to delay determining his next coaching move until after the Super Bowl. That likely signals his intention to remain in the NFL. Meanwhile, in reaction to that, program sources in Ann Arbor tell me Sherrone Moore’s focus has shifted decidedly towards former Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

With Sam’s report on Wednesday afternoon that former Ravens and Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale emerging as the potential frontrunner for the same position with the Wolverines, we can discuss some potential specifics recruiting-wise IF the hire is made. This could easily apply to any candidate or hire that comes in from the NFL but we’ll use Martindale as the application for now….

– If there is a member on Michigan’s staff or a part of their program who is aware of how important recruiting is to the program, it’s Sherrone Moore. A theoretical Wink Martindale hire would be the opposite of a plus on the recruiting trail. However, it’s my strong belief that Moore is aware that he would have to surround his defensive coordinator with what we call ‘dawgs’ on the recruiting trail. The pressure would ramp up to make the coordinating position coach hires more recruiting oriented. Again, this is something I strongly believe Moore knows.

– If we’re being honest, neither Mike MacDonald or Jesse Minter were positives on the recruiting trail. MacDonald ended up as a clear ‘minus’ while Minter was a bit more involved and aggressive but was still not anything approaching an elite recruiter at DC. Long story short, I don’t believe Moore or Michigan is going to view the DC hire as a recruiting aimed hire, particularly when Sam’s reports have been clear about Moore wanting a ‘walk around’ DC much like Minter and Mac both were.
