Liverpool step up Romeo Lavia pursuit as details of rejected bid emerge

Liverpool will make an improved bid for Romeo Lavia as Jurgen Klopp looks to seal another midfield transfer ahead of Premier League season

Liverpool are targeting a deal for Romeo Lavia

Liverpool are prepared to test the resolve of Southampton as they ramp up their efforts to sign Romeo Lavia.

The Reds have long established 19-year-old Lavia as a chief midfield target as Jurgen Klopp looks to further bolster his engine room resources following the earlier arrival of £95million duo Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Southampton have already rejected an offer of £34m plus £4m in add-ons for the player, who moved to the South Coast last summer from Manchester City for an initial £10.5m rising to £14m.

Liverpool will now make an improved offer for Lavia as Southampton look to receive as close to their previously reported £50m asking price, with City having negotiated a 20% sell-on clause in the deal that took the player to the South Coast 12 months ago.

While the Reds had earmarked Lavia as a long-term replacement for Fabinho, their interest has been accelerated with the Brazilian having become a target for Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittiahd. His proposed £40m move is expected to be completed imminently as clubs edge nearer an agreement over the payment structure of the transfer.
