Everton officially have statistically the worst finisher in the Premier League this season

Everton have been one of the most profligate sides in the Premier League. This is not a new concept.

Forging clear-cut chance after clear-cut chance has not been enough for the Toffees, who at times have felt cursed in their efforts to find the back of the net.

In recent times, a side in royal blue has not created so many golden opportunities, so to see them all squandered is a crying shame.

Especially given the presence of a top striker in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has hit double figures in this division before on multiple occasions.

But, it is now he who is proving to be the biggest culprit, after years of suggestions that that his return would save the club from certain doom.

Whilst their inability to score is not a new issue, the frequency with which they are missing chances is.

That newfound ability to create is certainly owed to the brilliance of Sean Dyche, who is working miracles by continuing to galvanise a side that must be so tired of all the off-pitch turmoil.

Their ability to shut off from the drama is unparalleled, but they do need to start picking up wins if they are to avoid the drop yet again.

So, to do this, they need to start scoring goals.

Calvert-Lewin, as their main marksman, naturally sees the burden fall upon him, but of late he is simply getting no luck at all.

Well, this latest statistic from WhoScored only serves to emphasise his inability to find the net, as they write: ‘Dominic Calvert-Lewin is underperforming his xG more than any other player in the Premier League this season (-5.69)’.

As the old saying goes, ‘sometimes as a striker you just need one to go in off your bum,’ for want of a better word.

Well, even when it seemed certain that he might end his drought, his close-range header against Tottenham Hotspur was eventually registered as an assist, with Jack Harrison ending up with the final touch.

A painfully ironic piece of football that sums up the season of the 26-year-old so far, it was expected that his return from persisting injury problems would solve this issue.

But, as showcased, things have only gotten worse.

He is a striker sorely lacking confidence, and as such he is snatching at shots, missing great chances and earning a reputation as a profligate dud.

But, having scored 13 and 16 across two respective Premier League seasons, the quality and composure are clearly within.

He just needs to enjoy that one goal to kickstart things again, and he will arguably have no better chance than against Crystal Palace on Monday.
