Darren Bent left surprised by ‘very odd’ Everton news he’s told live on talkSPORT

Darren Bent says it is “very odd” that Everton are reportedly interested in signing free agent Jesse Lingard.

talkSPORT reported on Tuesday (2 January) that Lingard could be offered a Premier League lifeline by Everton.

The former Manchester United winger has been without a club since his Nottingham Forest contract expired at the end of last season.

Told the news live on talkSPORT by co-host Andy Goldstein, a surprised Bent said [2 January, 5:50pm]: “It’s a very odd one, that. It just doesn’t seem like a Sean Dyche signing.”

Avoid.

If Everton have learned anything from the Dele Alli transfer, it is that these potentially enticing deals are best left alone.

It would be easy for Dyche to look at Lingard and see a player with bags of potential who contributed to 13 goals in half a season for West Ham.

That was three seasons ago, however, and since then he has struggled back at Manchester United and in his only season with Forest.

A move to the Saudi Pro League fell through earlier this year, and since then the former England international has been left twiddling his thumbs.

Lingard has offered nothing since his loan spell with West Ham to suggest he is anywhere near the quality to perform in the Premier League.

The fact nobody has taken a chance on the 31-year-old says pretty much all you need to know.

Loan deals and free agents – if there are any others out there – are very much welcome at Goodison Park this window, but this Lingard move should be avoided.
