‘What I can say’: Agent confirms Liverpool have met 19-year-old midfielder likened to Steven Gerrard
Liverpool have reportedly met with Senegalese youth international Pape Diop over a potential transfer, with the Zulte Waregem talent expected to secure a big move this summer.
According to the player’s agent Gerald Sagoe via Redmen TV, the Reds met with the 19-year-old in March for formal discussions over a potential transfer, with Diop’s representative comparing the midfielder’s style of play to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
Indeed, such praise will of course raise some eyebrows from Liverpool supporters. Yet with Jurgen Klopp’s side in the market for a midfielder, Diop could now be an option for the Reds heading into the final six weeks of the summer transfer window.
Sagoe said about his meeting with Liverpool over potentially signing Diop: “What I can say is that we did have preliminary conversations with a member of the scouting team from Liverpool, and this was in Paris sometime in March this year.
“We had two days of conversations at a hotel and they were enquiring generally about Pape Demba, about his status, what he’s up to. We just exchanged information, we explained to them his contract length, we explained to him the project that we want, as well as the boy’s ambitions and his personal objectives in the game.”
With a grand total of 45 professional minutes played in his entire career, it’s safe to say that Diop won’t be joining Liverpool to replace a Fabinho or Jordan Henderson anytime soon. However, with the club meeting the player’s agent, the midfielder could be one for the future for the Reds.
As we know, Liverpool are excellent at picking up young talents for the academy with the hope that they can develop into stars for the senior team. And Diop could be the latest name to walk the well-trodden path that last season saw Stefan Bajcetic make the same move.
