Jorg Schmadtke is now considering signing ‘phenomenal’ midfielder for Liverpool – journalist

Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke is keeping an eye on Manu Kone as a potential signing.

Kone had been singled out as one of the players Liverpool were pursuing earlier in the window. But having since signed Dominik Szoboszlai and targeted Romeo Lavia, links have gone a little quiet.

According to journalist Christian Falk though, that could soon be about to change. Writing for CaughtOffside, Falk claims that the Reds – and Schmadtke in particular – are still interested in Kone, despite the 22-year-old sustaining a recent injury.

“Jorg Schmadtke made clear that it won’t happen between Liverpool and Micky van de Ven,” the journalist began. “At Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp is saying what he wants in the market and Schmadkte is making plans from this.

“We’ve been previously talking about Manu Kone, for example. He had a knee injury at the European U21 Championship, so it will take time, as he can’t pass any medical tests at the moment. So this could be a topic that will be interesting for English clubs like Liverpool.

“Schmadtke has an eye on him. So these are things in the background that Schmadtke is doing at the moment.”

Schmadtke keeping an eye on Kone

As Liverpool prepare for life without Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, we may now start to see links to seemingly former targets start popping up again.

Moises Caicedo, for example, had long been crossed off the Reds shopping list this summer. But with the revelations that two senior midfielders could leave Anfield, the Ecuadorian is now apparently back on it.

The same potentially applies to another player long-linked with Liverpool, Ryan Gravenberch.

And if those two stories are still alive, then you’d have to think that Kone’s could well be as well.

Earlier this week, the Frenchman was discussing his future in a very relaxed manner. It appears that he’s biding his time waiting for the right move.

The longer he waits, the more attractive he may become to Liverpool. Described as ‘phenomenal’ by Mark Schwarzer last season, Kone is certainly a player who you could see at Anfield.

For now, it still feels as though other targets are ahead of him. But there’s been plenty of twists in this window so far, so we can’t rule it out.
