Liverpool explored deal for £60m player, but haven’t come back with an offer – journalist

Liverpool have concrete interest in Dominik Szoboszlai, but feel his RB Leipzig release clause is too high.

Some big news broke earlier this afternoon, with journalist David Ornstein reporting that the Reds are ‘exploring’ a deal to sign Szoboszlai.

Confirming that news, Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze took to Twitter to add a couple more interesting details.

“Can confirm the concrete LFC interest in Dominik Szoboszlai,” Hinze wrote. “NUFC are also still in. Open future for the Hungarian, whose release clause is €70m [£60m]. But: The exit option only runs until 30 June! After that, the transfer fee is freely negotiable.

“Both LFC and NUFC felt the clause was too expensive in the first step. According to our information, however, neither the Reds nor the Magpies have made an official offer to Leipzig so far.

“English duel for the Hungarian. Time is running out for the release clause.”

It looks like there’s a really interesting poker battle about to get underway for Szoboszlai’s signing this summer.

Unless one of them blinks and pays the Hungarian’s release clause before Friday, a straight shoot-out will ensue.

From Liverpool’s point of view, there are positives and negatives to this scenario. On a positive note, Szoboszlai would clearly absolutely love to play for Jurgen Klopp.

He hasn’t exactly made a secret out of that fact and that could be a massive card for the Reds to play.

Conversely though, Newcastle potentially have slightly deeper pockets than Liverpool at the moment. The Magpies are still having to comply with FFP rules, but with the Champions League money now rolling in, they might be able to go further.

As a result, we don’t think Liverpool should turn their noses up too firmly at Szoboszlai’s release clause. £60m for a 22-year-old midfielder with such a high ceiling doesn’t seem like such a bad deal at all.

Of course, the Reds may feel that they can get the Hungary international in for less than that. But with Newcastle around, the bidding could get a little higher, too. Let’s see how things play out over the next couple of days.
