19-year-old Liverpool prospect could be about to get his big chance after what happened last night

Jurgen Klopp has got some thinking to do after Andy Robertson was taken off with an injury last night.

The Liverpool left-back was substituted just before half-time during Scotland’s 2-0 loss against Spain on Thursday evening.

It looked like a dislocated shoulder for Robertson, which depending on the severity, could put him out of action for some time.

As a result, Klopp will be expected to give Kostas Tsimikas a run as Liverpool’s starting left-back. But what of the Reds’ frequent mid-week matches? With four Europa League group games still to play and a Carabao Cup fourth round tie with Bournemouth on the docket, someone will have to step in.

Well, thankfully for Liverpool they appear to have just the man for the job. 19-year-old Luke Chambers made his debut in September against Leicester City and would look like the perfect new deputy for Tsimikas.

Chambers set for first-team chance
Over the summer it had looked likely that Chambers would be heading out on-loan this season.

But surprising interest from the likes of Bayer Leverkusen never went anywhere, and the teenager stayed put.

Initially, it had looked unlikely that he’d be getting much game time off the back of that. Robertson starts near-enough every game for Liverpool, while Tsimikas is good enough to play every one that the Scotland captain doesn’t.

Nevertheless, the injury to Robbo means the decision to keep Chambers looks like a good one.

Being dropped into the Europa League squad will be a test for the youngster, but if he’s as good a talent as he’s billed to be, then he’ll be fine.

It will also be a fantastic opportunity for Chambers to show his credentials. At 19, there’s no rush for him to be ready for the first-team just yet. But with Robertson turning 30 in March, Klopp will be thinking about potential successors.

For a time it looked as though Tsimikas could be that man. The 27-year-old has dropped off a little of late though, and looks destined to be a back-up. So, bad news for one player usually means good news for another. And Chambers looks set to be the one to benefit this time around. Go and show what you can do, Luke!
