Crystal Palace among clubs interested in deal for £20m outcast
Crystal Palace are reportedly among the clubs interested in a deal for Everton outcast Ben Godfrey.
Godfrey has played just one minute of Premier League football this season, as the 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park.
The defender joined Everton for £20m in 2020 following Norwich City’s relegation, and after a bright start at the club, he is now surplus to requirements, and could be set to move in the January transfer window.
Crystal Palace are interested in Ben Godfrey
A report from 90min has now revealed that Crystal Palace, as well as Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur among others, are monitoring Godfrey’s situation with a view to a move.
The defender, who can play at right-back, is naturally a centre-back and has also been linked with Burnley and Rangers.
It is unclear what kind of price tag he would have if available in January, but Palace may need to fight off a lot of competition if they are to land him.
Do Crystal Palace need Ben Godfrey?
Crystal Palace are well stocked at centre-back, with Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi both delivering exceptional performances this season, to the extent that Rob Holding has hardly had a look in since his arrival from Arsenal this summer.
MORE PALACE STORIES
If they see Godfrey as a central defender, then he may be an unnecessary signing unless there is a major departure in defence.
However, if Palace see Godfrey as a right-back, then he could be a good signing. Joel Ward has struggled this season, and a reinforcement in the position is arguably a key priority for Palace.
If they can land him cheaply, then a change of environment and a settled defence could help Godfrey succeed at Palace, and rediscover his form after a few difficult seasons for the two-cap England international.
