Liverpool did speak to £86m player’s agents about joining them this summer, but he wasn’t interested

Liverpool made a recent attempt to sign Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde, but were knocked back.

That’s according to TeamTalk, who claim that the Reds made a very ‘real’ attempt to bring the Uruguayan to Anfield. They claim that following the arrival of Jude Bellingham, Liverpool wanted to check on Valverde’s availability.

To do so, the Reds reportedly approached the 24-year-old’s representatives, as well as Madrid themselves.

However, the answer they got back is said to have been the same from both: not interested. Valverde is reportedly not looking to move, and Real are supposedly unwilling to sell anyway.

Manchester City and Chelsea are both claimed to have had similar approaches turned down, too.

Valverde staying in Madrid

Valverde leaving Real Madrid for Liverpool has always felt like an unlikely prospect. But with the arrival of Bellingham, as well as the presence of a number of other, top midfielders, this was a fair question to ask from the Reds.

It certainly seems a better to time to ask than last year, when Liverpool reportedly had a bid of around £86m turned down for Valverde.

Back then he felt almost untouchable at Madrid. Fresh from running rings around the Reds in the Champions League final, he looked ready to kick on another level or two

Initially he did that during 2022/23. But with off-field problems proving to be a distraction for him, his form tailed off throughout the second half of the season especially.

Now, with Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga as well Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, Madrid are insanely stacked in midfield. As Valverde is often asked to do a job out wide, perhaps he could be tempted to take on a new challenge.

Ultimately, it looks like that won’t be the case. Valverde has already confirmed as much publicly.

Clearly Liverpool like Valverde, though. If his circumstances change and he doesn’t end up getting the football he wants at Santiago Bernabeu, you can bet on Liverpool being in the mix again. This could be one to keep an eye on in the future.
