Journalist explains Maddison’s thoughts on Tottenham and Newcastle race
CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that James Maddison is open to joining either Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle United this summer.
Maddison has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham ever since Ange Postecoglou walked through the door at Hotspur Way.
On Sunday, Alasdair Gold explained in his column for Football.London just why the attacking midfielder is viewed as a priority target for Spurs, revealing that the new Tottenham head coach sees the 26-year-old as a versatile option who can play multiple positions in either a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1.
However, the Lilywhites continue to face competition from Newcastle for the England international, with several outlets claiming over the last couple of weeks that the Magpies are keen on the player (Sky Sports).
Maddison is open to both Spurs and Newcastle
Jacobs has now taken to social media to state that while Eddie Howe’s men do want to sign Maddison, they are not willing to pay over £40m for his services.
The journalist added that Leicester are hopeful that a bidding war would ensue for the former Norwich man, which would push his price up to around £55m.
According to Jacobs’ update, Maddison would be happy to move to St James Park or the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
Several clubs looking now, although some put off by #LCFC valuation. As revealed last summer, Spurs also very keen. Maddison open to both moves.
Spurs Web Opinion
One does get the feeling that Maddison is the one signing that Tottenham would not compromise on this summer as he is seen as an ideal fit for Postecoglou.
However, I do not think Spurs would pay over £50m for a player with just one year left on his deal. So, it looks like the Lilywhites are prepared to play a waiting game until the Foxes lower their demands.
