The Reds will be looking to go top of the table with a victory, having lost and draw their previous two away matches at Tottenham and Brighton respectively. Meanwhile, Everton will hope to build on a morale-boosting 3-0 victory over Bournemouth and continue to move up the table by getting a result at Anfield for the first time since 2021.

The Liverpool manager said: “Red card changed the game, Everton weren’t as deep a block before that and then they were and it took a little too long for us to get used to it. What pleased me was we didn’t get frustrated and played to the final whistle.

“To be honest, I didn’t see it properly but I knew when it was Ibou it could be tricky. I imagine the frustration of Sean at this moment, but it was still 0-0. and 10 v 10, I thought we were still the better side. It would have been interesting. Would Everton have changed? We won 2-0 and deserved the three points. Of that there’s no doubt.”

The Everton boss has just said: “They are a good side, we know that. But we defended very well. Red card is touch and go. Second one is a yellow.

“The penalty changes the game and it’s difficult after that. I don’t like the modern rule. I liked it when you had to make a deliberate act.”

On the Konate foul: “I have no clue. I asked the referee. He felt it wasn’t a bookable offence. I don’t know what it is then. Klopp couldn’t wait to get him off. He knows and we know.”

More on Konate foul: “I got a yellow card! I don’t know what for. For gesticulating what everyone in the stadium is thinking. I’ve seen the footage back. In a second, the ref is going no chance. I’d be amazing if anyone out there thinks it wasn’t a yellow.”

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Van Dijk said: “In my opinion the hard work came form the fight Everton put in. The long balls, the set pieces, they tried to counter on us but we were very prepared for it.

“The message was to stay patient and play quick from side to side. They made the change at half-time to play with five at the back and we had to be more patient.

“It is difficult to face teams playing with 10 men. We have been on the other side and done well. Our mindset was they were still playing with 11 because it is a bit of mental thing when you have a man extra.

“We have been doing it [breaking quickly] for many seasons it is a big strength with the pace. The second goal especially. It is something we enjoy and have to keep going.”

The Liverpool midfielder has just told TNT Sports: “It feels really good, playing at Anfield is something special and playing against Everton is a derby. It feels nice.

“I expected it would be a good atmosphere but not that loud. I have played in a lot of stadiums but this is one of the best.

“Trent was one of the players who spoke about the atmosphere – I asked how it will be. All the staff said it would be really good.

“I know how it feels to play with 10 men and know how Everton felt, but we had to be focused. It is the perfect start to the weekend.”
