GREAT NEWS: Steelers release RB Anthony McFarland

The team announced they have released the former Maryland running back

The Steelers have released former fourth-round pick Anthony McFarland, the team announced.

The former Maryland Terrapin constantly showed flashes in preseason play, but has never made it as a consistent piece in the running back rotation on the 53-man roster.

McFarland had opportunities as the team’s kick returner, both this season and in 2021. His longest return in nine tries was 37 yards. Since being drafted in 2020, McFarland has appeared in just 17 games.

McFarland spent just two seasons in college before declaring for the NFL Draft after his sophomore season at Maryland. In 23 games, he rushed for 1,648 yards and 12 touchdowns, while adding 24 receptions and a touchdown as a receiver.

Now as a free agent, it’s hard to imagine he’ll be available for long, as teams are always searching for depth at running back to plug-and-play. We’ll see where he lands, and how long before he signs elsewhere.
