Tottenham Hotspur have reached a personal agreement with Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, according to Football Insider sources.
Spurs are working on a deal for Raya, 27, after identifying him as a prime target to replace Hugo Lloris, who will leave this summer after 11 years at the club. The Lilywhites have already made progress on the transfer with contract terms already agreed with Raya.
But Spurs and Brentford remain distant in their assessment of the shot stopper.
Brentford are expecting £40m while the North Londoners are hoping to close a deal in the region of £30m. Raya, whose contract expires in June 2024, has been closely watched by the Spurs recruitment team all season.
The Spain international’s relatively low salary by Premier League standards will make it difficult for Brentford to keep him. After Lloris struggled in the 2022-23 season, Spurs are keen to sign a new off-season first-choice goalkeeper.
The World Cup winner struggled with form, made several spectacular mistakes – and also struggled with injuries after the winter break midway through the season.
Substitute Fraser Forster, whose contract expires in June 2024, replaced Lloris and conceded 28 goals in 20 games.
Meanwhile, Raya has made 39 appearances in all competitions in the 2022-23 season, conceding 47 goals and keeping 12 clean sheets.
